Virian Vanderbilt awoke in the dark from a dream. She blinked her eyes in the intense darkness just to check that they were open and she was really awake. She’d been home with Harald and her children – it had all seemed so real! She missed them so much! And then she woke up and she was snatched away, and returned to this dark, miserable hell!

She had no idea what the time was – or if it was day or night – but she was so disturbed that she got up and dressed by the dim illumination provided by the flashlight set on low. Come hell or high water, today was the day, she decided sternly! Her jaw set, she gathered up the flashlight and the medical pad and every other light source she had at her disposal, and went deeper into the wreck.

It must have been several hours later, after searching the interior thoroughly, that Virian finally discovered a solar charger. It had been part of a soil-sampling analyzer, which had been smashed in the crash – but the charger part of it still worked. As soon as she took it outside and unfolded the panels, the little indicator lights came on and shone like the prettiest diamonds she’d ever seen! She left the pad and flashlight on charge the entire day, while she planted carrot tops and potato segments in the garden.

By the end of the day, she sat at a table in her cabin, eating a hot vegetable stew by flashlight. She’d angled some pieces of broken mirror around the room to spread the light around some – which really helped. On the table in front of her, sat a mobile PC, and she’d been staring thoughtfully at the screen, which was brightly lit with power. She’d discovered it while she was sifting through detritus earlier that day, and discovered that it was still working. She’d decided to keep a journal.

“There are no birds here.” She typed, thinking as her fingers moved across the keys. “But that might also be a good thing. At least I don’t have to worry about them eating my veggies in the garden!”
